Withings Wifi Body Scale Reviews:

Review 1 : A scale that keeps getting better and better

This review is from: Withings Wifi Body Scale (Health and Beauty)
The Withings Wi-Fi scale is a fascinating step forward in the use of Wi-Fi to share information for the consumer's benefit.

I purchased my scale from the Withings web site but it was shipped from their U.S. Amazon store. It appears to be one of the first scales to ship within the US as I received it in early October 2009.

After the scale is configured for your Wi-Fi network, and the account on the server is set up, the process of weighing goes like this: Step on the scale. The scale will fluctuate for a moment while adjusting to your weight. After a few moments, the scale should accept a weight, and then display a bar moving across the display from left to right as the data is uploaded to the server. When the bar display is complete, the scale then displays your Body Fat % and then displays your BMI. If the scale has a problem thinking that the person on the scale is not centered, there will appear an arrow in one of the corners where it believes there is too much weight and it would like you to adjust your weight away from that corner.

The scale is a pretty straightforward device and will not require any in-depth learning but some users might desire a user's manual as there is none beyond the slip of paper that instructs you how to insert the batteries. A pdf document that a user could download would be a great addition for those that would like to better understand what the capabilities are for the device and how they can make best use of the product. After all, this scale is not a cheap scale and most users who purchase it will be technically minded with curious wonderings beyond what is obvious. Withings does have an online forum for ongoing discussion and if you have a question, visiting the forums helps as there are always other users who are experiencing the same issues or have found an answer for something you may come up against.

The scale has the ability to recognize more than one user. There is an algorithm that the server uses to determine which user is on the scale as it expects each user to have a significantly different weight and/or body fat % composition than other users. If it can not detect which user is on the scale from 2 different users, the scale will show an arrow so that by adjusting the users balance on the scale, the user can indicate which user they are. If there are 3 or more users using the scale, this process will not work and the users must each 'claim' or 'refuse' the weight on the web site for their tracking. Unfortunately, having a single user claim that weight will not remove it from the other user's records and each other user must also remove the 'unknown user' weight.

Because I have an iPhone, I was intrigued by how I (or others that I allow) could watch my weight change and body fat changes over time. It is impressive how quickly the iPhone receives the weighing data and Withings has been smart to use a badge on the WiScale application to notify the user that new data has been received. I have not noticed any Alerts yet on the iPhone but they are aware of that capability given that the preference exists within the iPhone settings.

For the techies that like to take things to the next level, there is a capability to download a CSV delimited file containing your weighing history. The file is perfectly formatted to slide right into your Excel program.

There are a couple of things that I expect to see happen as Withings moves to version 2 of their software. Currently, there is no ability to upload data to the server so as to benefit from having historical data that you have accumulated prior to your Withings scale purchase. Manually entering historical data is limited in that the server does not accept data with the precision similar to what the scale records. Withings says that this will be fixed in a future update.

A feature that is missing is the ability to indicate that the user is an athlete and that the Body Fat should be analyzed with that significant difference in mind. Many users who choose a scale such as this might well be expecting this recognition by the software.

The Basal Metabolic Rate would also be a nice feature that may be included at a later time but is not currently calculated or shown.

Withings Scale Pros:
Attractive
Capable of ongoing improvements in features through firmware updates
iPhone application for ease of sharing your success
Capable of multiple users being tracked
Can be set for metric (kg) or imperial (lbs)
Very responsive to customer feedback

Withings Scale Cons:
Accuracy is limited to your typical home use scale.
Not the cheapest product that does this kind of analysis but one of the more innovative.

Executive bottom line: The scale has some fun potential but it should be recognized that technology does not necessarily bring about increased accuracy. I've rated this scale with 5 stars because it is what it appears to be, the design is beautiful and the scale uses technology in innovative ways. The scale has potential for becoming an an awesome product as Withings has the capability to enhance its current capabilities easily. Let's hope they continue to give us even more as time go on

Review 2 :

The scale itself looks nice, works fast and was easy to setup.

The only thing I would warn people about is that you do have to connect the scale via a provided USB cable to your computer to set it up. The port to connect the USB cable to the scale is located in the battery compartment, so after you put the batteries in don't put the cover back on. You'll just be taking it right back off again to connect the scale to your computer. Once the batteries are installed you'll go the Withings website to make an account, then you will connect the scale via USB to your pc to connect it to your network and the account you just created. I would also suggest reading the FAQ on the website once the scale is setup, it provides good information about the display and messages you may get on it.

I had no problem connecting the scale to my secure wireless network, which also uses mac filtering. I had no need to change any of my security settings to get the scale connected.

Review 3 : Works as advertised

This scale works as advertised, it seems to weigh accurately and uploads to their database like it should. It does a good job of figuring out the difference between my wife and me, but we do have a 90lb difference. I did break the first one I got. I somehow locked it up while it was updating itself and wouldn't connect anymore. I had it less than an hour and it broke, but within a week Withings had a new one out to me with no charge for the shipping. Round 2 works great. The only thing that didn't work so well were the little feet to put on if you are using it on carpet. I don't consider my carpet plush by any means, it is just about as cheap as you can get. I suppose if you had berber it may work. I had a chunk of butcher block lying around and countersunk a few holes for the feet to fit in, presto problem solved. Scale does what it should, and the ability to easily track your weight has definitely made me more conscious about watching my diet. Recommended.

Review 4 : Awesome little gadget - who would have thought wifi in a scale,

When I first read about this product on Engadget I was like "why would you want wifi on your scale???".. but I have to say, the next day after I was entering my weight/body fat into my ipod touch and I thought to myself wouldn't it be cool if I had a scale that would log all this for me every time I weighed! Did some research and that's exactly what it does! So I got one! Seriously it tracks your weight and BMI (lbs of fat) for you on a cool chart (many options on the chart) -- so you can see if you making progress or bad habits are starting to effect your weight/body fat. You can label certain days with any notes you want. I enter in my waist measurements once a week (so I can make sure it's decreasing along with my fat percent - because sometimes you may not loose weight but you're replacing it with muscle so your waist is shrinking and your body fat is decreasing, which you can tell from this scale)... The scale even connected through my wifi which is encrypted with WPA-PSK security!

Looks: It's a purdy little thing! It's almost so nice you don't want to stand on it and get your foot prints all over it :) The display is large and it displays your weight (seems vary consistent unlike my previous scale).. then pops up a progress bar (measuring your body fat) and tells your BMI / lbs of fat (and I'm guessing at that time it uploads it to the internet cause within a minute it's online for me to view).

One cool thing I like is that the website allows you to set goals for weight/fat and so you can see how close to your goal you are. Oh and it will actually show you the battery level of your scale when you're on the site, cool little tidbit of info. I'll update more after I've had the scale for a few months, but as of now I'm thrilled! Today I was telling my coworkers about it, who are always after the latest gadgets and staying in shape, and showed them the graphs through firefox and there were like that's awesome (which is where I got the title from). Two of my friends were especially excited because they're having a weight loss contest (who can loose the most weight but you have to keep it off for a month) - so this is an easy (CAN'T CHEAT) way to really tell who's winning the bet!

Review 5 : A great product and service to back it up

I recently purchased this scale on Amazon and I've been very happy with it -- not only with the scale itself and the web-based interface for tracking progress, but also with the team behind it. Whenever I have come across issues with the web-based interface (to be expected as its a new product), members of the team respond to my issues via their online forum almost immediately and make changes almost immediately. That, to me, is what makes this a great product instead of a good product -- a responsive team that listens and engages in dialog with the customers. BTW, the website works as advertised, but there were small little things that bothered me. Other quick things:

- The process of connecting the scale to my password-protected wireless network was amazingly simple. If you've had problems connecting webcams, etc. to your wireless net, don't let that stop you from trying this. It was really smooth and easy.

- The automatic user recognition is great. It's nice that I don't have to select user1, user2, etc. by tapping on the scale.

- I don't use the iphone app much, but I love that it's there and will probably use it more once I get closer to reaching my goals. It's a great thing to look at before walking into a donut shop. :-)

- It is a beautiful device. I love great design and I think great design should be rewarded.

I guess you can consider me a fan and I hope they will make more connected products in the future.

Review 6 : First Impressions

The early reviews of the thoughtfully designed Withings WiFi Body Scale motivated me to purchase a unit. By way of background, I have been tracking my weight daily for the last two years and I was more than ready to automate the data gathering so I could focus more on the data analysis. I have been using a Homedics unit that tracks weight, BIA body fat, as well as water and a Soehnle unit that just records body weight. My Homedics unit is more erratic than the Sohenle in that successive measurements produce different readings and it also seems to underestimate body weight by about 1 lb on average. The BMI based body fat requires you to input your activity status on a three step scale. I lead a very active life (2600+ calories a day on average). If I identify myself as being at the highest level of fitness, my body fat readings come to be around 5%, this does not match up against an underwater weight test (breath out completely, stay still while floating in a water tank while getting weighed) that said I was about 14% fat. So I switched to level two and now the Homedics unit says I am about 9% fat. If I switch to the lowest level I get numbers closer to 20%.

The Withings unit works like a charm, the setup on my home WiFi network worked without any hitches. You do the initial configuration over a USB link and then the unit associates with the access point and off you go. The web interface is visually slick, just a bit sluggish on my aging Vista laptop, but very nice overall. The unit does a good job of guessing your identity from your weight but if your weight swings by about 5 lbs., which mine does, it places the reading into an unknown category. You can manually associate the reading with your profile on line.

One of the poor reviews came from someone who noted that the unit failed to record body fat. This happens if the unit senses that it is not on a level surface. Arrows at the four corners flash in an effort to nudge you to center yourself correctly. If you fail to stabilize the unit does not go past the wobbly weight display. Something similar happens if you step on the platform with your sneakers on. I suspect that in this case the unit measures an infinite impedance through the non-conducting shoes, recognizes this as abnormal, and aborts.

There is a notes field where you can annotate your readings. The link to Google Health works seamlessly except that the notes seems not to carry over. I will update later on the reliability of the readings. At first glance, the weight seems to be an overestimates by a bit less than 1 lb. compared to a professionally calibrated cantilever style scale at the gym. The BMI based fat measurements seem to be in the same range as the Homedics and the Withings unit does offers a choice between "2009 version", "2010 version" and "Athlete version".

Review 7 : Finally, a product that works as advertised

I don't normally leave reviews, but I'm thoroughly impressed with the scale. It's easy to use, setup is a simple, and the iPhone app/website keep me motivated. The Withings programmers are listening and innovating. I hope they continue to add integration to other sites/apps (and make improvements to their site). The only downside is poor battery life. Batteries last about a month worth of readings.

Review 8 : Wow... thoroughly impressed!

I have only been using this for a few days, and I can say that so far I am way impressed! It comes in very nice packaging, and the scale itself looks even more sleek than the photos convey. To install, just attach the scale to your pc using the included usb cable and then go to the withings website. It walks you right through the installation. On my first try, the installation failed, I think because I am using Windows7. The second time around, I clicked the link to see the drivers for more OS's. There wasn't one for Win7, so I chose the one for Vista. This time around, it worked perfectly and let me install the scale with no further issues. Aside from that tiny little snag, it works perfectly. You just step on the scale in bare feet, and look at the display to see if you are standing properly. Little arrows tell you which way to move if your feet are not even. Then it weighs you, and a little progress bar shows up indicating that it is measuring your body fat. And that's it! You just log into the website and your weight is already there. Very very cool! I have been waiting a long time for a scale like this, and it looks like the Withings folks did it right.

Review 9 : Just a Wonderful Product

It just worked beautiful for me. After the install I had to press the button on the bottom and it fully meshed with my router and flashed its firmware. Real nice product. Very good install and software.

Follow up! After several days all is just perfect. The WIFI with WPA2 security has been flawless. There are 3 family members using it - 2 with Iphones. Considering what this product consist of and the high quality construction - it is reasonably priced.

Review 10 :

I love the fact that I can weigh in and have my weight tracked both on Withings and on Runkeeper. It is a real motivator to see it tracked and it is effortless. I have had a few other scales that I had to manually keep track of and I would do great at first, then I would forget to mark it down. This keeps me on track and the progress is dead simple to track. It was a bit shocking to see how many pounds of fat I was carrying. The BMI is great but seeing the fat in actual pounds is a real eye opener! I would buy this again for sure.

Review 11 : Excellent Hi-Tech WiFi Scales

I decided to wait several months before I reported my experience with this product to be sure that it was reliable. I was not really looking for a scale, but as an avid runner and cyclist, I had discovered a fantastic iPhone app, RunKeeper Pro ([...]) which provided info about how the Withings Wifi Body Scale could be linked to one's account with RunKeeper. Upon further investigation, I realized that if the Withings Scale lived up to its billing, it would be a great tool to assist me in getting back into competitive shape. Now I can proudly say, that my weight, and most importantly, my lean body mass, is now identical to that of my racing days of 25 years ago. Of course, my speed is no where close to what it was, but I think I am honestly faster relatively to my age group now than I was previously.

Setting up the scale was very straightforward, and it works with Snow Leopard on a Mac with no problems. As I spend about half the year in FL and the other half in NC, I was concerned about using the scale in dual locations. When I came to NC this spring, I bought another scale and after some trial and error, I got it set up so that it basically merged into my Withings account with the result that all new readings were added onto my FL data so that all of my data was continuous and uninterrupted. Absolutely could not work any better, even under somewhat unusual circumstances. And as hoped, after linking RunKeeper and Withings, Runkeeper automatically picks up the Withings data. Standing alone, the Withings scale is worth the money, although it is certainly not inexpensive. But in this instance, you really do get an amazing, premium product, which provides a continuous record and charts of weight, lean body mass, fat body mass, and BMI. And when combined with RunKeeper Pro, the entire package is a remarkable value. Also set up an account for my wife. The scale somehow recognizes her automatically, so no "adjustments" have to be made when either of us steps on the scale.

Almost forgot, there is a free Apple App (WiScale) which I installed on my 3GS iPhone and iPad, in addition to one's online accounts with Withings. If you are serious about monitoring your body weight and/or are a performance athlete, this is a no brainer. It will assist you in getting to the next level and beyond!!

As always, price and shipping from Amazon was the very best!!

Review 12 : Great scale for the connected person

The wife and I are making a effort this year to loose some weight and get fit. We purchased a tread mill that connects to the web to help track our progress and then I started looking for a way to keep track of our weight. I purchased the Withings WiFi Body Scale based on the reviews on Amazon and had it up and running within minutes of it's arrival. I've compared it's accuracy with the scales in my doctor's office which I'm sure cost allot more and it seems to be inline with theirs.
I would recommend the Withings WiFi Body Scale to anyone with a little technical know how not that it's really required.

Review 13 : Helping me lose weight

The only way I enjoy losing weight through diet and exercise is by getting constant metrics on the progress I'm making. I'm still waiting on an interminable backorder for a FitBit, but this scale has already gotten me started by letting me track my weight loss.

The setup was easy enough, but it doesn't really matter because you only do it once and then using the device is as simple as stepping on any scale. It's wonderful to not have to do a thing to make it work.

I'd prefer a desktop application to the web app, but it's a very slick website. Eventually, I'd also love if there were a way to use it in conjunction with my FitBit, to update the FitBit website on my current weight. But that's as much (or more) something for FitBit to work on as it is WiThings.

Review 14 : Imagine if Apple designed a bathroom scale

The Withings Wifi scale is a great idea. Centralized data reporting on the Internet via Wifi, and web and iphone interfaces to view your progress. The actual scale is very well designed, but the thing that blew me away was the web interface for managing your data. It looks very slick and its very easy to use. The whole product makes me think that this is what bathroom scale would look like if it was designed by Apple. I'm extremely impressed.

Review 15 : Consistent reference point and great ease of use

First, I would like to acknowledge that there will be a tolerance of error in any body fat measurement method whether bio-impedance, caliper, measurement equation... whatever. Some (hydrostatic measurement) are more accurate than others, but I try to keep in mind that it is all about consistent reference. When using a device like the Withings wi-fi, if one focuses more on progress over time rather than the difference in the scale's feedback and that of another form of body fat measurement then I think that user will be well pleased with the scale.

Cost

The price point for the Withings wi-fi scale is certainly a bit more than the typical bathroom scale, but, then agaib, it is intended to be far more feature rich than an average scale. If one is serious about body composition measurement, then I believe the Withings wi-fi scale is a great tool for long term use.

Maintenance

My concern before purchasing was battery life. I had seen a few reviews that cited poor battery life and I did not want to be constantly buying batteries (or worrying about rechargeable batteries). I am happy to report that I have had no issue with battery life. The batteries I put in my scale in June are, 6 months later, still going strong. The Withings website even allows the user to see the estimated battery charge remaining in the scale. After 6 months: 73% remaining. Not too shabby for using the scale, on average, of twice a week.

Utilization/Access

I also enjoy the iPhone app provided by Withings, as well as the fact that a few of my favorite websites/apps have API links with my Withings account. This means that not only am I able to see my results over time on the Withings site itself, but I am also able to see it in my Daily Burn account, Runkeeper account, etc. These sites allow for me to link to my Withings account and save me the trouble of manual entry or maintenance. Quite convenient!

Summation

I couldn't be more pleased with my Withings scale. Is it perfect? No. Is it the most accurate form of body composition measurement? No. What it is, however, is a convenient, consistent reference point for gauging one's body fat percentage over time. It is a great tool in the pursuit of improved health and physical well-being. Two thumbs up from this satisfied user.

Review 16 : Functional Fun

To put this review on context, I'm a runner that loves gadgets and am a data hound.

After discovering the joys of the Garmin 405CX and the web dashboard provided by that product to review runs, I discovered it was possible to add health information such as weight automatically via supported products. While the Garmin Connect service supports another brands scale, I liked the look of the Withings Wifi body scale and it worked with another service I use called Sport Tracks [...].

Happily, I can now monitor my running progress using quantifiable data, including not only information provided by my 405CX such as heart rate and speed, but now weight, bmi, fat and lean mass.

So, the summary:

Positives
+ Easy to setup
+ My wife loves it (she has a iPhone)
+ I can track my 2 and 4 year olds growth (the scale automatically identifies each person once setup)
+ Withings are adding new partners all the time (no Garmin Connect yet!)
+ Good to excellent build quality
+ Product firmware can be updated opening the possibility for product enhancements over time
+ Will keep me motivated in my training
+ Intuitive web interface with statistics and reporting (PDF)

Negatives
- Included USB cable didn't work (for initial setup) however it is standard connector and was quickly resolved by Withings support
- Waiting for Garmin Connect integration

Overall, I am very happy with the purchase and hope the expanding list of partners increases (to include Garmin).

Review 17 : You can't manage what you don't measure

As a lifelong dieter (be on the lookout for my new book, "How I lost 1,000 lbs. and still look like this!") I have found that the scale is the enemy. Why? Because you put a number in your head, then ease on to the scale and see if it matches, plus or minus a few. And that's the end of it. You get off the scale and never look back. Perhaps you write down the numbers, perhaps you put them in a spreadsheet, perhaps perhaps. I gather from my own experience, recording is few and far between and more importantly, trend information is really never reviewed. Eventually, long stretches of time will go by before the next foray onto the scale adventure.

Enter the Withings scale (and web and iPhone app). Get on, it figures out who is actually standing on it through data, not switches. Then it transmits the statistics over a home wireless network and voila, today's data is turned into real information that gives you trends, statistics and everything you need to manage your weight.

The only thing it won't do is knock the fork out of my hands. I believe they are working on that for the next version.

Review 18 : Innovative concept

The scale:
The wifi scale is an innovation in concept and design. The scale appears to be well made, looks great, and is very easy to use and read. Stepping on the scale and reading the output of your weight, fat mass, and BMI (which it does very well) is only the beginning. Through a web interface you can then see your measurements charted over time. You can set goals and see how you're doing compared to those. If you are an iphone user there is also a very nice app that allows you to see the same charted data on your phone. The scale's firmware is also kept updated automatically, depending on your internet connection.

The company:
Withings is very responsive to customer questions and suggestions as evidenced through the forums:
[...]
It is nice to get the product automatically updated with new features (firmware updates) without any effort on the consumer's part.

Result:
A very well executed new concept in weight and body mass management

Review 19 : Easy to set up and fun to use

This is one of those products that I never knew I wanted, but once I carefully researched its features and checked out the company's website it was a 30 second decision to hit the 'one click' buy button. The company has an active presence on their online forum and genuinely seem to care about updating their product according to user feedback. I really enjoy the recently added twitter feature which posts a tweet to your account after each weigh-in, daily, or weekly. In order to maximize its full potential, you really need to have a twitter account... There's nothing like the threat of potential public embarrassment to motivate yourself to stay on track with a diet and exercise plan.

Review 20 : A must have for anyone tracking their health and fitness data

I found this scale through my DailyBurn.com health and fitness account. DailyBurn.com can be configured to work with this scale so that body weight and body fat percentage data are uploaded into your DB account and can analyzed with your other exercise and nutrition information. I decided to give it a try and have been so glad that I did.

The product comes nicely packaged. The packaging exterior was very simple and elegant and the contents inside were nicely organized so that I could easily identify every piece. It comes with the scale, batteries, a USB cable, and carpet feet.

Set-up was simple - I just inserted the batteries (included), plugged into my computer's USB port, went to the start page listed on the front of the scale to answer a couple of questions and it was ready to go. The data is uploaded to your Withings account and is available for review through your Withings dashboard. I found the dashboard very clean and easy to use - it was a very good experience and I would definitely use it. However, I was already using DailyBurn for tracking my nutrition and exercise so I linked my Withings account up with Daily Burn. It was equally simple to connect to my DB account.

Daily use has been simple - I stand on the scale for a couple of seconds immediately after getting out of bed and then I'm off to the next thing. Having it connected to my DailyBurn account let's me easily see small fluctuations in my weight and to tie those fluctuations to specific nutrition and/or exercise changes.

This product along with the online account gives me real feedback about my nutrition and exercise like I've never had before without doing a lot of work. Ever since I've been using it my exercise and nutrition have improved considerably and I am happily getting into better shape. If you are the type of person who benefits from being able to see real health gains from exercise and diet through charts and graphs then I recommend you add this product as part of your routine. It makes collecting that data so easy to do.

Review 21 : Great device for managing weight and motivating weight loss

So here is my added tuppence for the abundance of reviews for this scale, which pertains to how it helps motivate weight loss:

1. It create family awareness and fosters family member accountability for their own weight. It identifies family members and associates the measured weight with the family members. And data can be shared across housholds (and continents) so currently my girlfriend has one at her home, and my immediate family has an another at their home abroad. We all periodically check each other's weight and "goad" (in a friendly, respectful way) those family members which stray. My next purchase cycle will be to add 2 aunts to the circle...

2. It measures to a resolution of 0.1lbs or 0.1kg. I can hear dietitians saying 0.1kg is an irrelevant measure (being the weight of a half a cup of water). Yup - they are correct. But there is some grey matter trickery at work here: We are all motivated by numbers - So on a daily basis - if we weigh 70.2kg on day 1 and 70.3kg on day 2, it is definitely likely that we were a bit more dehydrated on day 1 thus accounting for the weight gap. True, but at that point most of us would still be motivated to lose that 0.1 extra kilo or pound. That 0.1 resolution drives motivation.

On the negative side, while the weight measurement is accurate and immediately useful, the fat/lean mass calculation seems to very random at first (and might be discouraging to some). However, over time (months, in my case) trends did start appearing and I can definitely see the weight moving from fat to muscle.

So - do I recommend the scale? Well, I lost 5 points on the BMI scale (from heavily overweight to a doctor recommended BMI), purchased the scale as gifts to family, girlfriend and other friends (close friends, otherwise it may be awkward), and decided to give up some of my free time to write this review. And I now look forward to running up stairs. So yes - it is highly recommended.

Review 22 : Outstanding scale and weight loss motivational tool

I checked out the Withings Wifi Body Scale after reading a review in the NY Times. I had been using the same Sears upright scale for the past thirty years. I am a tad geeky, and liked the idea of a wifi scale - I had never previously heard of such an item. I have been trying to lose ten pounds for the past ten years, and am always looking for encouragement.

One of the best tools is keeping careful track of your weight. I had tried spreadsheets, but would eventually forget to note my weight. The Withings scale solves that problem. Each morning, still half asleep, I go downstairs and step on the scale. It takes about ten seconds to register my weight, then it automatically turns itself off. Half the time I am too sleepy to even notice how much I weigh, but my results are posted to a link on my Facebook account immediately. I don't know if anyone really cares, but I somehow feel that posting my weight spurs me on to losing some.

The key to weight loss is, of course, modifying one's eating habits. In order to accomplish this, one must be MOTIVATED. Motivation is the key to succeeding at many tasks, and weight loss is no exception. After 58 days of use, I am still using the Withings scale on a daily basis, and I feel that I have made some progress. Watching my progress on the graph encourages me to stay focused. This is mostly 'mind over matter' but it works for me. Wish me luck!

Review 23 : Great product!!

I looked at this scale and read reviews on it for weeks before finally buying. It's a great product! Set up was so easy. I followed the instructions, added myself and my husband, and everything worked like it's supposed to. You just step on the scale, wait through the readings --- weight, body fat, and BMI --- and step off. Go to your iPhone or iPad or iPod, and the readings are there. The scale knows who stepped on, and has never mixed us up. We've had the scale a few weeks, and it's been great tracking weight loss. Once I go to a maintenance phase with the plan I'm on, this scale will be great for tracking a stable weight. The only down side to the scale is the price. However, it does what it's supposed to and set up is easy --- and I do not consider myself a computer/techie genius. The last thing, it's a really nice looking scale. The glass is easy to keep clean, and I think it would look great in most bathrooms. We have tile floors, so I can't speak to how it works on carpet. Overall, a great product and highly recommended.

Review 24 : Awesome!!!

I love this scale, I have tried to track my weight in Excel in the past, but always forget to write it down. Now I can simply weigh myself and it is recorded, if I want I can even import it into Excel. In addition there are a number of different applications that will integrate with it.

It seems to be pretty accurate, did not notice a change from my last scale. The body fat percentage goes up and down a little, however from what I understand that can result from your hydration levels. It is great to have this as I now have a better idea of what my ideal weight should be. After losing about 100 pounds it is encouraging to know that I only have about 25 more to get to 10% body fat.

Set up is pretty easy, simply put the batteries in and plug it into your computer using the supplied micro USB cable. You can than configure the wifi to work with your security settings.

Review 25 : Well designed piece of hardware

I am generally very critical regarding the obvious flaws in most electronics. This device has left me with very little to be critical of. Setup was fairly simple. The device supports up to 8 unique users. Each user can be federated into it's own profile. Profiles can then be linked to additional external data sources (eg: Google Health) enabling automatic statistical updating. Individual users are automatically identified. The device is very sleek looking, it is almost a shame to have to stand on it. I would recommend this device for anyone who is looking to simplify the management of health data including: Weight, Fat, and BMI.

Review 26 : Great tool for those trying to be healthy!

There have been a lot of great reviews written here that tell you the important features of this scale. All true, what a great product! I am a private person who has been battling weight for both appearances and health. I have never known my % of fat and lean mass - so when I read about this scale, I thought what a perfect tool.

I am not sorry I bought it.... I get on (the scale fluctuates up down and makes me feel like I am on Biggest Loser) and all info is transmitted to my account. No more manually entering my weight into my spreadsheet, still not knowing the % of fat and lean mass. Withings has a wonderful user interface that you configure to meet your own needs and/or expectations.

I used to avoid my scale because if my weight fluctuated, I was demotivated. I have more incentive now because I have more information to arm myself with!

Review 27 : Excellent Device

This device is very attractive and works quite well. It seems very accurate with weight measurement. The body fat reading seems a bit low.

The only suggestion that I have is to display th4e body fat percentage (not the number of pounds) directly on the scale instead of through the iPod/iPhone application.

Also, each user should have their own password for privacy.

Otherwise, this product is great and you should purchase it now. The setup is easy to perform.

Review 28 : Fantastic Product - Painless/ Quick Setup for Scale, Website, and iPhone App

Took less than 10 minutes to set up the scale, web account and iPhone apps for myself and my wife. The scale looks fantastic, is extremely low profile (our bathroom closet door actually opens cleanly right over the scale), and feels very high quality.

The information updates to your iPhone app almost instantly, and has all of the intuitive controls you would expect from a good app - finger scrolling, zooming in/out, tilt the phone for landscape view of info etc.

We've been using it for 2 weeks now, and are really enjoying it as an additional tool to track our health/fitness. They have a very helpful user forum as well, and appear to be quick to respond to customer input/questions and keep everyone updated on future devolopments for the iPhone app etc. (Password protection for the iPhone app is supposedly in development for those that like to keep their information private!)

It's definitely a bit on the pricey side, but for anyone looking to add that extra level of detail, motivation (and fun!) to your daily health/fitness routine, I would definitely recommend giving this scale a try.

Review 29 : Withings Wifi Body Scale

I received the Withings scale a few days ago and it has performed exactly as expected.
I purchased it for myself to monitor my weight and diet plan, but my wife has also been very happy with the ease of use and functionality.
We have even set up our two daughters (4 and 7) as users on the scale.
I particularly like that there is no need to select a user before stepping on the scale. It determines who the current user is automatically. If an "unknown" person's data is captured, the website allows you to create a new user based on that data, or assign it to an existing user.
The website and iPhone app are simple to use, as they should be. I just want to go look at results and trending - I do not want to have to go and configure, maintain, adjust, etc... The website and iPhone app show you the actual data and refresh regularly. Simple and effective.

Of course this is an expensive scale if one is just needing a scale, but for anyone who wants to keep a more diligent view and record how their weight fluctuates, this is (in my opinion) the best scale/system available.

Review 30 : Amazingly perfect product

It's not often a manufacturer gets a product perfect the first time out of the gate, especially a category-defining gadget like a web-connected scale. As an early adopter my house is littered with tech junk that failed to live up to the hype.

I'm happy to say the Withings WiFi Scale does everything it advertises without fail. Set up was a breeze and it found my WiFi network and logged in with no problems at all. Although the included batteries were mostly run down by the time I set it up, a change to new batteries solved that minor hiccup. Since then I haven't had a second of dissatisfaction. It records my weight and sends it to the web site and my iPhone almost instantly.

The result: no more wondering where I am in my quest to lose a few pounds. And even better, no more lying to myself or manually writing down my weight every day.

My wife uses it too and the site/scale keeps our weights tracked separately. No idea how it pulls that off, but the one time it switched the weights the web site made it easy to correct.

I love the fact that they made it battery operated! Our bathroom's plug isn't ideally placed and I hate the idea of things plugged in near water :-)

It looks really nice in the bathroom, though it does require wipedowns from water drops now and then. That's about the worst thing I can say about it.

Thanks Withings for finally creating the scale I always wanted

Review 31 : Awesome 21st Century Scale!

This scale is awesome! It is accurate, beautiful, technologically advanced, easy to set up, and very easy to use.

This scale can track up to 8 members in a household. You do not have to tell the scale who you are. It KNOWS who you are. When either me, my wife or my two sons step on the scale it accurately determines who is on the scale and immediately sends the information to the web. Updates happen almost instantaneously.

Connecting the scale to my WiFi network (Apple Time Capsule - WPA2) took about 2 minutes. Very easy to follow step-by-step instructions. You can even set the scale up using JUST your iPhone; I did not know that until after I set up my scale.

The website (where your measurements are sent) is clean and allows for easy set up of user profiles.

The iPhone app is very cool. Provides the same information as the website except no editing. You can, however, delete readings using the iPhone app.

The only con is the price. It is expensive. But you get what you pay for. I am absolutely satisfied with my purchase and would recommend this scale to anyone who is looking for a scale that will keep a record of your family's weigh-ins. I'm tracking my own weight loss and the growth of my three children.

Review 32 : Great scale especially if you are into fitness

I have been working out consistently for 3 years. Over these years I have lost weight and seen my body change. But like anyone it has gone up and down, though for the most part I have kept the majority of my loss off. However, I am at a point where I would like to lose a little more and have changed my workout routines to accommodate this. This scale allows me to see other changes in my body outside of just my weight. It feels great to see what my BMI is and lean/fat mass percentages. Since these are not measurements I typically take I was pleasantly surprised to see them. Not only that I like that the scale can differentiate between users, since my husband and I are both working towards our own fitness goals. I love that it connects to my iPhone and the design is sleek and stylish. Overall I really like this scale even if it was a bit costly.

Review 33 : Okay, It's a Gadget, But a Useful One!

There's a business school maxim that holds that you can't manage what you can't measure, and it is equally applicable to weight management. Aside from those few annoying people with the metabolism of hummingbirds, monitoring our body weight and composition is essential to motivating us to eat and exercise appropriately. Sure, you could assiduously weigh yourself on a conventional scale and enter the data into a spreadsheet, or write the numbers on the wall, but aside from those few annoying people with organized sales tax receipts, we just aren't going to do it for very long.

Another business school maxim--or maybe my mother's--is that after a certain age it is futile to resolve to change your character, and instead you have to switch to simply managing the character you are. The Withings scale, at least so far, has been a perfect aid in doing just that. I've been weighing myself every morning, and there is something about knowing that the moment of reckoning is nigh that makes me think twice about that extra bite or fifty. As described, the scale indeed wirelessly and effortlessly transmits its report of your weight, lean body mass, fat, and BMI to your laptop and/or smart phone, displaying the data in very readable graph form. I use a MacBook Pro and an iPhone, both of which connect to the scale through the free Withings website "cloud", and the display is very satisfying...at least while the slope of the weight curve continues to be negative.

The scale is substantial, attractive, easy to clean, and can be configured to require a zero reset (by stepping on and off of it before weighing) or not. There is a short adjustment period required to learn to balance your weight evenly on both feet (the scale gives an indicator if you are leaning too much on one foot or the other), and a couple of times I needed to wet my hands and run them over the soles of my feet before the body composition function would register. The weight readings are a tad higher than on my old scale, but consistent, and immediate re-weighings seldom differ by more than two-tenths of a pound.

With people paying thousands of dollars to lose weight, the otherwise seemingly steep cost of the scale is really quite reasonable. In any case, for those of us who are enamored of gadgets, this one at least has the potential to contribute to our health.

Review 34 : Great way to get motivated

THE GOOD:
* Set-up was dead easy and took under 5 minutes.
* Sensitive WiFi antenna allows me to place it in an area where most of my WiFi gadgets loose signal.
* Looks even better than I expected.
* Polished and intuitive website-tracking.
THE BAD:
* Sorry, but I honestly can't think of anything constructive to say...
SUMMARY:
* It's one of those items that you will be recommending to everyone as the non-plus-ultra in it's category.

Review 35 : Awesome Scale for a Health Geek

As someone who logs their weight and body fat % for the past year with pen and paper, and then manually typed that into the computer to track my health stats, this scale is amazing. Now with just stepping on the scale I can keep track of my daily stats automatically, with no manual work by me.

In addition, Withings provides a full API for developers, with push notification so Withings notifies other applications when new data is available. This way I can still keep my homegrown database all automatically.

Great product, and they have clients for iphone, windows mobile, and the web.

Review 36 : High Technology Motivation

How advanced can a bathroom scale be? The Withings WiFi Body Scale keeps your weight easily at hand. It is sold for people who need the extra motivation (and visibility) to keep their weight loss goals on target. However, it is actually more than just a technology gimmick. It allows you to see how your weight changes during the day. The overall trend is displayed along with individual weight measurements. The free iPhone app makes it easy to check your progress even on the go. The software includes support for multiple users. No extra steps are required. Just step on the scale, and it knows who you are and updates the appropriate account. There is also support for authorized external viewers. This is handy if you have a personal trainer or a doctor that is tracking your progress. Did I turn on that option? Hell no. But it is there if you want to use it.

Yes, it is a bit pricey for a scale. If you're going to track your weight loss efforts, there is no better way.

Review 37 : Exceeded expectations

I am a gadget freak for sure and expected this to have the usual glitches. Instead, it just works. What it does is pretty straightforward, but the setup was easy. They make it very easy to pair with an iphone and use the app for that device. It can figure out who is on the scale after you setup your profiles and automatically sends the data to the right person. Looks very elegant with no buttons at all on top. You step on, it will "nudge" you with arrows if you are not in the right spot for a good measurement and then when you are, it does 3 readings/calculations(weight, fat and bmi), shuts itself off and then sends it via wifi to your account. Very cool. The AAA batteries that come with it are really cheapo and lasted a week or so, but new duracell's haved worked for weeks now with no problem. I hope a bunch of people buy this so they stay in business. Very innovative product.

Review 38 : Withings scale is awesome

I bought the withings scale after thinking I came up with the idea for a twittering scale on my own... oh well...

It is a very nice looking scale, it's very thin so it fits under my bathroom door where the last one would hit the door when I closed it. You don't need to press any buttons for it to take your weight, just stand on it and a few seconds later you will see your weight, body fat and lean mass. Setting the scale up to connect to WiFi was also very simple. It instantly shares the data with their website and sends up a tweet if you have that enabled. The website interface for tracking your progress is very nice and clean.

They have many options for sharing your data. I think this really helps you hold yourself accountable when you are on a diet and it's nice to visually see your hard work paying off. I do website development and my only wish is that they offered your data as a public RSS feed (probably no big deal for most people).

If you are a technology savvy individual that wants a visually appealing scale that can access the web all while staying very accurate? This is it!

Review 39 : brilliant - exactly what it should be!

Before finding this scale, I imagined that what I'd like in my house is an aesthetically pleasing scale, with no cords, that reports my data to the cloud, puts it into a beautiful interface, sends it to my phone, and connects with other data repositories (Google health, but seriously, i'd like Microsoft Health Vault please). I came to amazon, typed in wifi scale, found this well rated product. After one month of use, can't say a single bad thing. Plus, I've recommended it to so many friends, I think I should get a commission, right? I just LOVE it when products are well done. Thank you.

Review 40 : Excellent !

Really nice design, super easy to set up and to use! My data automatically transfers within a few minutes to the withings website and to my iPhone.

The Web interface for tracking data is also well designed and allows easy navigation to monitor my weight and fat mass.

Another great feature is that the scale automatically recognizes me and my wife when we step on the scale, and we can choose not to share our graphs :) !

Expensive but definitely worth it!
